Chisako and me at my retirement party. We decided to retire early and enjoy our life together.

Our Previous Camping Experience

My popup days extend back to when my father constructed a homemade popup of sorts when I was just a child. I remember the first trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, we lost the top somewhere on the trip down. Glad it didn't rain on that trip! We spent many enjoyable trips in that camper until my father lost interest and went on to other projects.

Living in Florida, many of our outdoor activities involved boats and the water.

When the boys were older, we did some very primitive camping in the Everglades National Park along the Gulf Coast at a place called Lostman's Creek. This was just a sand spit and 25 miles each way by boat to civilization (sort of). It was a half day trip just getting to the campsite, so we couldn't just go to the store for marshmallows. With limited space and a long trip to the store, we learned to take what we needed and to need what we took. Those were winter trips and the colder it was, the more fun we had! And those sunsets were just beautiful.

When I decided to retire early (after much convincing that we could do it financially),  my wife came home one day raving about how nice her friend's popup camper was. At the time, I wasn't too enthused. As I remembered, pop-ups were only tents on wheels, and I wasn't real interested in going too primitive. There are various aches and pains that some days take longer to go away than others. She convinced me to go to a RV show and to just look. I was very impressed with today's popup campers, the layouts and options available. From that point on I've been hooked. Maybe someday we'll go the motorhome/travel trailer route, but right now, a popup gives me just right mix of camping convenience and creature comforts necessary to really enjoy the trip. It fits comfortably within our retirement budget allocated for 'toys'. See Our Camper for a description of what we finally chose and why.

I hope you enjoy my website. Drop us a line sometime and ... HAPPY CAMPING!
