Chisako and me at my retirement party. We decided to retire early and enjoy our life together. My popup days extend back to when my father constructed a
homemade popup of sorts when I was just a child. I remember the
first trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, we lost the top
somewhere on the trip down. Glad it didn't rain on that trip!
When the boys were older, we did some very primitive camping in
the Everglades National Park along the Gulf Coast at a place called
Lostman's Creek. This was just a sand spit and 25 miles each way by
boat to civilization (sort of). It was a half day trip just getting
to the campsite, so we couldn't just go to the store for
marshmallows. With limited space and a long trip to the store, we
learned to take what we needed and to need what we took. Those were
winter trips and the colder it was, the more fun we had! And those
sunsets were just beautiful. When I decided to retire early (after much
convincing that we could do it financially), my wife came home
one day raving about how nice her friend's popup camper was. At the
time, I wasn't too enthused. As I remembered, pop-ups were only
tents on wheels, and I wasn't real interested in going too
primitive. There are various aches and pains that some days take
longer to go away than others.
