Ft Desoto, St Petersburg, FlJust 10 miles from downtown St. Petersburg, this park operated by Pinellas County is really several islands in the entrance to Tampa Bay. The campground has large sites with foliage for privacy. There is a special tenting and popup section that has limbs too low for the bigger rv's. Many sites are on the water and the facilities are kept clean and neat. The park rangers patrolled the park but in an unobtrusive manner. There are miles of bike and roller blade trails as well as two fishing piers, several public beaches, and a boat launch area. The only negative is they won't take reservations by phone or the internet and it's a cash only transaction. You can call (727) 582-2267 for a recorded availability message, There are several small tolls involved in getting to the island but not excessive. The raccoons were aggressive so make sure to bungee your cooler if left outside.
