Highland Hammocks State ParkOne of the things I like about club camping, is we take trips to places where my wife and I would not normally go. An example of this is Highland Hammocks State Park located close to Sebring, FL. This park is one originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It has numerous hiking trails which offer an excellent example of all types of the sub-tropical central Florida landscape. The Loop road offers a great opportunity for bikers who like a hard surface away from traffic. The park has some 130+ improved campsites of various sizes. Some of the sites were quite large, but others were marginal at best. Mostly set in a pine forest, most of the sites (not all) had some shade available. Many of the sites were difficult to get a trailer into because of the narrow roads and trees left in a critical place, making backing difficult. I found I used both my longer water hose and a 30 foot extension for my power connection. The restroom facilities were typical of the Florida State Park system and we rated them as OK only. One problem we had is that the restroom lost water pressure Saturday night. I don't know if this was because of a problem or that the campground was full, but there wasn't even enough pressure to flush the toilets properly and the conditions in the shower house deteriorated rapidly. After that, the wife was glad that we had the portapotti. Problems aside, we did enjoy our visit to Highland Hammocks but would not rate it in our top 10 list of favorite campgrounds. But with only a $10.00 charge per night including water and electric, we found it well worth it. |
