Jonathan Dickinson State Park, Hobe Sound, FL

Jonathan Dickinson State Park is only about 20 miles from my home, but I had never been to the State Park itself, even though I have lived here for 30+ years! For a visitor, it is an excellent destination to explore the West Palm Beach area. Located at the northern edge of the large south Florida metroplex (from Jupiter south to Miami, it is almost a solid town now), it offers a good solid base to explore the West Palm Beach area. Beaches and the Jupiter Inlet, a popular destination of fisherman, surfers, and swimmers is close by.

Review This park had some of the cleanest restrooms we have experienced in the Florida State Park system. This extended to the rest of the park. It was obvious that the local workers took pride in there work as the park was well maintained throughout. Main activities include canoeing on the Loxahatchee River, guided trip to Trapper Nelson's, bicyling and hiking. There is an offroad bicycling course which offers a challenge for an old fogey like me. There are two campground areas, The River Campground and the Pine Grove Campground (where we stayed). Pine Grove campground offered pretty large sites with good shade. We experienced some bug problems in the nature of No-see-ums, so insect repellant is probably required year round. The terrain is hillier than you might expect (not big hills but they offer a good workout for riding a bicycle). This park was converted from a military base in World War 2. My next door neighbor was stationed there. There is little left of the base.

dcp_0805.jpg (35669 bytes) Close enough to home that my son, his wife and our two grandkids came for a visit. They had such a good time the twins ended up spending two nights with us.
dcp_0809.jpg (32401 bytes) The twins really had a ball crawling around outside the camper.
