Long Key State Park, Long Key, FL

This state park has always been one of my favorites, dating from early tenting days 30+ years ago. We had planned on going here in February, but things just didn't work out. This is the first time we had taken the popup to Long Key though. At Long Key, all sites are directly on the Atlantic Ocean. Not all sites have shade available, but we lucked out on site 16, even though Reserve America stated no shade, there was shade throughout most of the day. I was hesitant in booking this site, as it was right across from the dump station, but we hardly noticed  that it was there, and since we were so close to one of the restrooms, the portipotti got much less use!

Review A long, skinny state park on Long Key (duh), it's been around a while. The restroom facilities have been recently upgraded and were clean and in good shape. Sites are not very wide, but wide enough for my slideout and awning. There was a pretty good breeze when we were there, so the bugs weren't a problem, but I've been there when you couldn't step outside after dusk. Don't forget to cross over to the Gulf side around sunset, you won't regret it. You're more likely to get some shade in the lower numbered sites, but also get more traffic passing by. Traffic noise from US 1 was not as bad as I expected and thought it was much worse at Bahia Honda gulf side. All the shopping you need located about 15 miles to the south at Marathon, and to the north at Islamorada, a little farther, but a convience store located a short ways out the gate. Canoe rentals available and a hiking trail. Campers with boats anchor them right out in front of their campsites. You can't receive any TV stations here with just rabbit ears, so take along some movies for you DVD or VCR if you must have something to watch at night, or maybe you take along your satellite dish!
